Frequently Asked Questions
Who is conducting this study?
This study is being conducted by researchers at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Together, through our complementary areas of expertise, we can do a better job at addressing unanswered questions around how to best protect lupus patients from COVID.
Who can participate?
People who have been diagnosed with lupus; are 18 years or older; can speak and understand English; live, work, or seek care in Louisiana, Alabama, or Mississippi.
Why should I participate?
By participating in this study, you will receive information on the current recommendations for testing, vaccination, and treatment options for COVID among people living with lupus. You will also help us learn more about the experiences of people living with lupus and their views on COVID.
What is involved?
Participating in this study is voluntary. We will be asking you questions about your background, health, and experiences with COVID through online surveys. You will also be asked to take part in the Lupus Education Alliance Program (LEAP), where we will provide information about COVID testing, vaccination, and treatment. In total this will take about 75 minutes.
You will also be asked to complete two 30-minute follow-up online surveys 1- and 2-months after you complete the LEAP. Your time is valuable, so you will receive up to $100 in gift cards for completing all components of the study.
Are there any risks?
There is very little risk involved in participating in this study. You might experience some emotional discomfort when answering some of the questions. But these types of questions are generally without risk and have been used in other research studies before. You can also refuse to answer any questions if you choose.
Are there any benefits?
By taking part in the LEAP, you will receive information on the current recommendations for testing, vaccination, and treatment options for COVID among people living with lupus.
Will my information be private?
Yes. All of your information will be completely confidential. We will use a study number to identify the data that you provide rather than your name or other personal information. We will not disclose this information to anyone in any way that could be used to identify who you are. None of the information you provide will be placed in your medical record.
